In 2009 the Spanish cycle race “Vuelta de España” took of in Drenthe. To celebrate this the embassy organised several activities in Madrid:

  • Embassy cycles to work with Joop Zoetemelk and Abraham Olana
  • Book presentation: “Mi querida bicicleta. Relatos de ciclismo en Holanda y España” (My beloved bike. Cycling stories by Dutch & Spanish writers), partly financed by Letterenfonds. This specially designed booklet was later translated into Dutch: “Mijn geliefde fiets Spaanse en Nederlandse wielerverhalen” with an introduction by Frans Timmermans.
  • Seminar “Spain & Holland together by bike. Learning from the Dutch experience.” Seminar organised in colaboration with local transport (bus) company, trade union, city of Amsterdam, NS fiets.


Start of the Orange Week by cycling through the city centre of Madrid on Queen’s Day, Orange Bike Ride.


In preparation of the Orange Week Dutch designer Mara Berkhout together with designers/arquitects collective Basurama organised a four day recycling workshop “Ciclos locos” (mad bikes). Cycling through the city centre on Queen’s Day. The bicycles that were the result of the workshop took part in the orange bike ride.

  • Exhibition dedicated to the Provo movement
  • Seminar on the use of bicycles in big cities with the founder of Provo, Roel van Duijn and local stakeholders
  • Movie RIH by Meik Swaan & David Dijkhoff.
