Cycling Day April 14th – narrative

General overview

The Dutch Embassy in Lithuania has been very active in the field of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP), of which cycling is of course an important aspect. Having organized a seminar in December 2015, and two fruitful follow-up sessions in March 2016, we succeeded in bringing together Dutch experts and Lithuanian stakeholders, primarily Lithuanian professionals from municipalities all across the country. Hopefully in the future this will result in more sustainable and cycle-friendly urban mobility plans throughout Lithuania.

EU Cycling Day Activities

On April 14th the Dutch Embassy in Lithuania will start the day with organizing a seminar at the Vilnius Municipality. In cooperation with the Dutch Cycling Embassy, an intensive session with presentations and a panel discussion is envisioned. Among the participants will be decision makers from municipalities, private companies and cycling enthusiasts. We will dig into cycling policy and won’t shy away from addressing the most critical issues.

After the seminar the Ambassador and the Mayor of Vilnius will together ride their bikes to the iconic Cathedral Square, where they will unveil the Embassy’s present to the city of Vilnius: a very orange CarBikePort, a fun solution to parking a bicycle.

At the square a number of fun activities will be hosted in cooperation with local partners. There will be games for children, workshops on how to maintain your bike, a bicycling orienting game, safety-related giveaways and a temporary "bicycle lending library", where people can try out different types of special bicycles they would otherwise never have used (such as cargo bikes, tandems, MTB’s).

At the beginning of the evening people will jump on their bikes and, together with the Mayor and some Lithuanian celebrities, ride with us across Vilnius’ main street, Gedimino prospektas, where we will hopefully be able to make a record-selfie!

After, in cooperation with JCDecaux a puzzle tour through the city will take place, which will send at least 200 people divided into teams of ten across the city, doing challenges and competing for first place.  For the winning team the Embassy will provide an appropriate, of course cycle-related price.
